Summer Term 1

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside! This week we have been learning about seaside holidays and traditions. We used the information book ‘seaside holidays’ to learn about seaside holidays from over 100 years ago right up to the modern day seaside holiday. We talked about our own experiences of the seaside and the things people like to do. We watched video clips showing what it was like to go on holiday to the seaside in the Victorian times. As part of our learning we were introduced to ‘The Punch and Judy Show’. We used puppets to re-enact the shows for our friends. In one of the stories we saw a lighthouse by the seaside. This inspired many of the children to build their own models at the creative table. Our beach shop and cafe has proved very popular with lots of activity in there across the week including writing menus, labels and price tags. We also had beach huts created in the loose parts with lolly pop sticks.

What fun we had on break the rules day. Crazy hair, non uniform, juice in water bottles, unhealthy snacks for playtime, tattoos and name changes for the day! Great fun.

We have been learning all about money in maths. We decided to set up our beach shop and cafe role play area using the items from our maths game. We made price labels and paid for the toys and items with the correct amount of 1 pennies.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! This week we have been thinking all about ice cream., our favourite seaside treat! We have designed our own posters for the beach side shop, made ice cream sundaes with shaving foam, sprinkles and sauce! We’ve read lots of ice cream stories and shared our favourite flavour choices with our friends. We’ve practiced writing our letter shapes in sprinkles and paid for ice creams with the correct amounts using 1p, 2p and 5p coins.

What an exciting moment as we released our butterflies into our wild flower garden.

We love our share a story sessions on Friday’s with Year 1 and 2.

2D Shape transport pictures and paying for our travel tickets using different coins.

Caterpillar update: 18th May 2023. We have butterflies!

We’ve been enjoying our outdoor learning sessions with pre-school. This week we have been thinking about ways to travel. After reading the story ‘Green Light for Little Red Train’. We decided to print off some maps showing the places that little red resin had visited! Once outside, some of the children decided to build a steam train if their own to drive to the beach just like the story.

Journeys, vehicles, short trips, long trips and holidays. For the last couple of weeks we have been reading ‘Mr Gumpy’ stories and l thinking about his journeys. We have retold the stories, sequenced the story, used puppets to create a show of the story. We have enjoyed playing with cars, investigating ramps, creating car maps, programming bee bots that we turned into train bots and bus bots. We have role played getting on a bus, a train and an aeroplane, we made tickets and explored paying for our fares with pennies. We made boats and tested them in the water to see if they floated and sailed along the ‘lake’. We explored tyre tracks in paint then used our strong fingers to scrub the cars clean with tooth brushes in our car wash! We’ve drawn vehicles, looking carefully at their features, we’ve matched cars to their number spaces in the car park and experimented with ramps to see which car would travel the fastest and the furthest! What a lot of learning.

Caterpillar update: May 6th 2023. EXCITING NEWS! The caterpillars are starting to build their chrysalides!

We have been so busy this week learning about the King. We have enjoyed playing our maths London bus game, making and writing cards to the King, creating London in the block area, making repeating pattern jewellery for the King, drawing the King’s cypher, finding the king’s treasure and taking a trip to the post box to post our cards and letter to King Charles!

Kings and Queens for the day! Today we have enjoyed celebrating the King’s coronation in school. We had a special dress up day and a yummy picnic at lunchtime. We have been reading our new book all about King Charles 111 and have learnt lots of facts about his life.

Crowns for the King’s coronation! This week we are learning all about King Charles and his Coronation celebrations. We used our scissor skills and design skills to create a crown to wear at our Coronation party later this week. Even our pre-school friends enjoyed making a crown!

Caterpillar update: May 2nd 2023. The caterpillars have grown so much over the weekend! I wonder when they might begin to make their chrysalis?

We love outdoor learning! We have been making the most of the wonderful weather and spent lots of time in our amazing outdoor classroom. We’ve explored mark making on different surfaces with different tools, construction, climbing, experimenting with potions, collaborative art, colour mixing, scientific investigations, examining and exploring nature and so much physical development.

Tadpoles! How lovely it was to have a donation of tadpoles brought to us by a very kind mummy. We are very excited to see them develop and grow. We will be observing them as they change and discussing what we can see over time. The children are very excited to help create a special home for them with some water plants in. Lots of children made observations and described the tadpoles. ‘It looks like a little fish but it’s super small.’ ‘Soon they will grown little legs before they change into frogs.’ ‘They might change colour because frogs aren’t black are they!’
