In Design Technology, we made hand puppets. As part of a sequence of lessons, we began by investigating a range of puppets and their features. We then practised our sewing skills, including sewing buttons on, joining two pieces of fabric together, practising a running stitch and an overstitch. We moved on to designing then making our own hand puppets. When our puppets were finished, we shared them with each other and evaluated our puppets.
We thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the zoo to finish off our topic on bears! We saw lots of different animals, including two Andean Bears!
Our topic this half-term, 'Bears', has been a geography based topic. The children have learnt the names of the 7 continents and 5 oceans, and where to locate them on a world map. They have found out about the different types of bears and which continents they live in. The children have also learnt about hot and cold regions of the world, landmarks and features of the environment, and how to identify physical and human features on aerial photographs.
As part of Children's Mental Health Week, we thought about and took part in activities linked to the 5 Ways to Wellbeing: Be active; Get Creative; Mindful Moments; Connect with Others; Give to Others.
Our school took part in the NSPCC Number Day. The children 'dressed for digits' and took part in lots of different number activities, while raising money for a very worthy cause!
In Maths, Year 1 and Year 2 have been learning addition strategies. Year 1 children worked with a partner, using ten frames and counters to make 20, and Year 2 have been practising addition with exchanging, using Base-10 to support their understanding.
Our Year 1 and Year 2 Topic this half-term is on 'Bears'. As part of our learning in English, we read the story, 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.' Our class went on our very own bear hunt in the school grounds. We thought about different adjectives to describe the different settings, and sound words we could use. Following on from this, the children worked together to create a wonderful soundscape of our bear hunt.
We enjoyed our Life Education Session in Year 1 & Year 2, with a very special visitor, Harold the giraffe! The children learnt all about 'Feelings', exploring body language, different emotions and how to help someone to feel better. The children loved joining in with the different activities.
