Summer 1

Our History topic this half-term has been, 'Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside'. The children began the topic, developing their oracy skills, talking about seaside holidays or visits they have been on. We then looked at photos of seaside holidays today and the children worked in small groups, recording what they could see in the photographs. We moved on to looking at photographs of seaside holidays in the past, focusing on Victorian seaside holidays. The children became historians, looking closely at the photographs to find clues of what they tell us about holidays in the past.

Squirrel Class enjoyed developing their cricket skills with a coach from Chance to Shine Cricket.

Our science topic this half-term is, 'Plants'. The children have learned about common wild and garden plants and the parts of a plant. They became plant detectives, going on a plant hunt in the school grounds, identifying different types of plants, including trees.

In maths, Year 1 have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and capacity and volume. They worked in small teams, measuring out different volumes of liquid and used the measurements to solve clues to identify different 2D and 3D shapes.

In maths, Reception children have been using a part-part-whole model for addition and subtraction, practising their counting skills and number recognition to 20, and comparing and measuring mass.

Squirrel class have made the most of the spring weather, spending time in our outdoor classroom, with lots of opportunities for physical development, imaginative play, problem-solving and team-work!
