Autumn 2
SUSTAINABILITY:
Why should we try to be more sustainably aware?
What can we do to help in our local area?
As part of our Sustainability topic, Y5&6 took part in a 'Saving Water' workshop...

Children made a pledge to reduce their water usage at home such as:
4 minute showers instead of 15-20 minutes
Have more showers than baths to use less water
To use a short flush
Not to put things down the toilet that should not be there!
To encourage other people in their household and other family and friends to do the same...
Art with a message - the final piece linked to our sustainability unit...
ENGLISH: Y5&6 have enjoyed their English lessons all term, so we have continued studying Shakespeare's play: Macbeth
Y5&6 worked collaboratively to bring all their knowledge of our Geography learning over this term to create a futuristic sustainable city.
After learning about renewable energy sources; how Copenhagen has a super cycle highway; how Singapore City has built lots of green spaces and environmental houses; about a 'poo' bus in Bristol that runs on biomass energy and how a football stadium in Freiburg was Germany's first solar-powered stadium, the children were inspired to create their own cities using their topic knowledge.
COMPUTING: digital photography

As part of our work with Global Links through the Blue Space Project, Y5&6 entered a digital photography competition titled: 'The Ripple Effect'. Their passion and eye for detail shone through with five children in our class receiving Honourable Mentions and one child coming Second Place overall! Currently their photographs are being exhibited in Lancaster University Library and Lancaster City Library.
Part of the competition was that the children had to write about the importance of water. These are some of their responses:
"In the future I see water being clean, keeping the world hydrated and healthy. My picture is of a window on a canal boat with a bunch of flowers peeking out."
"Water helps us stay alive and it made me love swimming. It has made an impact in my life and I hope that the world treats the water with more care. I took this picture of the canal as it reminds me of how much we depend on it to help us navigate through life."
"Water helps with a lot of things, not just keeping humans alive, but plants and animals too. Hearing the world or seeing water reminds me of nature, because nature survives off rain, the sun, wind and good care. My photograph is a beautiful green plant in front of a canal."
